Katie’s Success Story
“An Up and Down Journey”
Katie completed vision therapy at Walesby Vision Center starting in 2013 and completed six phases. She wrote about her experience with vision therapy in her essay that got her accepted to Florida State University for 2023.
“First grade reading class was when I first noticed words. Every time I had a book in my hand, my mind would race. The words when I read- why were they moving? Are the words supposed to move? This book is getting so hard to read, I need a new book. But this books’ words move too. I cant’ read this-I cant’ read anything. I am falling behind. A child, 7 years of age, is already falling behind on the education that just pressed play.
Soon, people around me began to realize the extent of this problem, and knew something had to be done. Thankfuly, my first grade teacher took a chance on me and pulled my parents into a meeting. She explained to them that I was falling behind, but not because I was disobedient or lazy, but because something was wrong. After extensive testing, I was referred ot a developmental optometrist who then explained the root of my struggles. My diagnosis was what is called binocular vision dysfunction. This meant that my line of sight in one of my eyes is out of alignment from the other, making my eyes unable to work together. The words on the page moved for a reason. Although that reason felt daunting, my parents rose to the occasion and did whatever they had to do, and the rest was up to me.
From there I went through four stages of vision therapy. My mom and I would drive thirty minutes to the office, four days a week, for an hour each day. It was hard and filled with tears of frustration, but ultimately it was rewarding. The completion of each stage was like climbing up this huge mountain and hitting the mile markers, each step leading closer towards the finish line. Throughout those years, I acquired ELPs’ and a 504 plan which provided me the help I needed. This obstacle felt so big at such a young age, but bigger things awaited for me on the other side.
At first accomplishments started small, like finishing a phase of vision therapy, but then they became bigger. I’ll never forget the time I came out of my room yelling for my mom after reading a Dr. Seuss book. I was jumping up and down, because I could finally understand what the words were saying, without any words moving. Suddenly, I became excited to go to school, and read like all the other kids. I was finally rising above the biggest obstacle of my childhood and catching up with all the other kids in my grade.
I am truly blessed for the people I had by my side through it all. My parents fought for me with every breath they had and someone was always there to pick me up and dust me off when I was down, which taught me that this disability did not define me. I am now in classes like AP English Language and Composition, as well as AP English literature, and exceling in them. If you told me this when I was younger, I wouldn’t of believed you.
Given the gravity of my situation, it should be easy to understand how it molded me into the person I am today, which is a person with more gratitude for the small accomplishments in life that suddenly became so big. I am now able to take things with a grain of salt, and understand that it is okay to struggle sometimes. I look back and smile when I reminisce on all the memories that came along with this part of my life. That little girl struggling to read in the back of the classroom is still a part of me, but this time it will be different. I have the tools to step into this new chapter of my life, with nothing but excitement and hope for everything that comes my way.”
